Jim Fallow, unmarried father of one and a struggling musician, thinks he has the perfect gig on the cruise ship M/V Platinum Princess. On a cruise from Hawaii to Tahiti, he meets the Chilean beauty Glenda Toller y Casas, the wife of a wealthy Australian winemaker. Unhappy with her marriage, she's traveling alone and falls for Jim. They have a secret, torrid romance on the ship. One night, Glenda inexplicably commits suicide by jumping to her death from the ship in front of a horrified Jim. Initially thrown in a Papeete jail on suspicion of murder, Jim is exonerated and freed. Troubled and obsessed by Glenda's suicide, he sets on a circuitous quest to find an explanation for her destructive action. His search leads him from Tahiti to Los Angeles and finally to the beautiful wine country of Yarra, Australia where he meets Glenda's husband, Angelo Toller. In this idyllic vineyard he finds a possible explanation for Glenda's suicide. Against the background of the hunt for a serial killer who's victims are mainly backpackers, this knowledge places him in a dangerous situation from which he may not come out alive.

The novel begins with somebody named Jim brooding in a prison in Tahiti. Later, we learn that he is a trumpet player in a band on a cruise ship and that he has an affair with a mysterious passenger named Glenda. Then Glenda jumps into the sea with Jim looking on. Personally I found this scene too melodramatic and incredible. Why would a pretty woman commit suicide on a cruise ship? This is the question that first-time novelist Manny Panta tries to answer through the life-story of a small-time musician named Jim Fallow. I like some of Mr. Panta's descriptions of the characters on the cruise ship a cruise director looks like a "gay Hitler" which begs the question: what does a "gay Hitler" look like, really?). Otherwise the plot meanders from Tahiti all the way to Australia and his sentences can be annoyingly repetitious. He even has the main character going on a side-trip to Santa Ynez wine country, a device that seems suspiciously tacked on. I found Jim to be a not very lovable character. He seems more like a deadbeat dad who likes to waste his time playing music and chasing women. On the other hand, he is believable enough as a flawed character whose only fault is being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I downloaded this ebook because I was attracted by the cover. Mr. Panta also designed the cover. Is this the fate of self-publishing authors, to do everything themselves? I hope not. "A Song for Glenda" is, on the whole, an easy read and full of little bits of information. For example, until I read this novel, I didn't know there was something called a Sambar deer. Also, I now know what Tahitians say when they men FU. Was this knowledge worth the price of the download? Not really. But at least I also know now that the Yarra Valley is in Australia.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. It emcompassed many of the places I have been and so that made it even more realistic to me. Keep writing Manny and I will read. Thanks.
I really enjoyed reading this book! Interesting settings, fascinating people and a can't put it down story. The answer to the mystery was a surprise but very logical in construction. The main character, Jim, is an everyman I can identify with, not a super-hero, but heroic. I would recommend this book to all mystery lovers!
