Within fourteen minutes the fatally-stricken cargo vessel 'Lycomedes' will plunge forever beneath the storm-shredded waters of the winter North Sea with fifty-four men, a limpid-eyed dog and a foul-beaked parrot aboard.
Into that agonizingly brief span is packed a lifetime of turbulence and tragedy, of cowardice and courage, of pathos and humour and the dawning acceptance of coming death even, incredibly, of moments of boredom and moments of exultation. You meet her crew for only a tiny fragment of their mortal lives, yet under the remorselessly escalating stresses of disaster you grow to know them intimately to understand, and to feel for them in their peril.
With experience and authority, Callison, himself a former Merchant Navy officer, vividly portrays the onset of catastrophe in such a way that you, the reader, will live though every instant while 'Lycomedes' tears herself apart beneath your feet. 'A Ship is Dying' is as stirring, as poignant, as overwhelming a sea story as has ever been recounted.
"Brian Callison compresses a chilling collection of marine horrors, all the more horrible because of his matter-of-fact tone. The behaviour of men under stress gives the book a powerful chemistry." NEW YORK TIMES.
"Make no mistake; Mr Callison can grip you ... Conrad might have liked a lot of this book." THE WALL STREET JOURNAL.

It's a treat to have Brian Callison's nautical adventures revived in Kindle format. This book is not exactly a novel since there's no plot, no main character, and little character development. It's more a slice of life, and a terrifying slice at that: the last fifteen minutes of a ship at sea. From the beginning, you know the ship is going to sink and sink fast. How does a catastrophe like that play out? How do people react? This book plunges you into the midst of it and will grip your interest to the point where you'll be tempted to read it at one go. I enjoyed it tremendously.Product details

A SHIP IS DYING edition by Brian Callison Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A unique book that tells the simple yet horrifying story of a ship that through one mans unfortunate mistake sinks in less than mins. It seems a long time but its not when there is terrible weather, confusion and a series of mistakes when mean a fine line between life and death at sea. It is both appalling and compelling at the same time as to who will live and who will die, and the fact that you know from the beginning that there is no escaping the disaster only makes it more agonising.
One of the best writers of sea-related stories since Alistair Maclean!!
I first read this book as a young third officer on a Blue Funnel 'A' boat in the 70's. I was riveted. It is a mariner's book written for mariners. Reading it 40 years later, it has not lost its magic. I would recommend this book, a "Flock of ships", "The Bone Collectors" and almost any book written by Brian Callison, he is a master of the sea story; gripping, suspenseful, and accurate.
